Synopsis: The Enterprise is observing a planet inhabited by the Akaali, a pre-industrial humanoid race, but the crew detects signs of an antimatter reactor on the surface.

Captain Archer leads a landing party to the planet, and discovers that reptilian Malurians are living in disguise among the natives. Archer learns that the Malurians have a secret underground mining operation, and the tetracyanate from their drill bits is contaminating the Akaali city's water supply and making the natives sick, so Archer decides to steal the Malurians' reactor and disable their mining operation.

  • Factoid: The Malurians are mining a veridium isotope, which is primarily used to manufacture explosives.
