Production Number: 22001 Original Air Date: 10-06-73 Stardates: 5392.4 Synopsis: The U.S.S. Enterprise is escorting two robot grain ships carrying quintotriticale to colonists on Sherman's Planet, which has been hit by crop failures and famine. The Enterprise encounters a Klingon battle cruiser attacking a smaller Federation scout ship. When the smaller ship is damaged, the Enterprise beams the pilot aboard, and the crew learns that it is Cyrano Jones, who is transporting Tribbles that are genetically engineered not to breed. The Klingons have a new stasis weapon, which can dampen power to the main systems on a starship. Captain Koloth of the Klingon battle cruiser orders the Enterprise to hand over Jones, who is accused of committing ecological sabotage. The Klingons' new stasis field does not have enough power to hold the Enterprise and the two robot grain ships, and Koloth is forced to withdraw. The Enterprise beams aboard containers of quintotriticale from one of the robot ships damaged by the Klingons. When the Klingons attack again, the containers aboard the Enterprise are damaged, and the Tribbles brought aboard by Cyrano Jones begin to feed on the grain, rapidly growing in size. Dr. McCoy determines that the new Tribbles grow fatter when they feed, rather than reproducing, but the fat Tribbles are actually large colonies of smaller Tribbles. In order to clean up the Tribbles infesting Deep Space Station K-7, Jones stole a Tribble predator called a Glommer, a genetically constructed prototype the Klingons developed after Jones illegally sold Tribbles on a Klingon planet. The Enterprise transports the stolen Glommer to the Klingon ship, along with several of the large Tribble colonies.
