Synopsis: The Voyager has been crossing a desolate region of space flooded with theta radiation for 53 days, with no visible stars for 2,500 light-years; it will take two more years to traverse the void.

The Voyager crew battles a Malon ship that is transporting hazardous waste through a vortex into the void, poisoning an indigenous race in the void. The Voyager destroys the vortex to prevent further contamination, after using it to reach the other side of the void, 2,500 light-years closer to Earth.

Tom Paris creates a "Captain Proton" holodeck program, based on mid-Twentieth Century movie depictions of the future.
